The French national team wants to win gold at the European Handball Championship – but it has already suffered its first setback. The second game of the main round, which will be played on Saturday (January 24), is of immense importance. France will be playing against Portugal. The French have generally made a strong start to the tournament. They beat Czechia 42-28, Ukraine 46-26, and Norway 38-34, with their attack in particular able to do as it pleased. However, they lost the top match against Denmark 29-32. France's class is undisputed, of course, but now the pressure is automatically increasing. Last year showed how difficult it can be to beat Portugal.
35:34 and 44:38, the defense in particular was really put to the test. For the Portuguese, a victory against the strong French team is actually a must, as the 30:32 defeat against Germany has somewhat worsened their excellent starting position. What remains are the results from the preliminary round: 31:29 against Denmark, 29:29 against North Macedonia, and 40:34 against Romania. The Portuguese conceded at least 29 goals, while the French almost kept the strong Danish team at bay with 32 goals. The big plus for Portugal is that superstar Victor Iturizza is finally back and ready to help his team.
