Canada will wrap up the preliminary round at the 2026 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament with a matchup against France on Sunday at PalaItalia Santa Giulia in Milan.
After two dominant performances, Team Canada has already clinched top spot in Group A and a spot in the quarterfinals. Jon Cooper’s side has put five pucks past both Czechia and Switzerland, while allowing just one goal in two games — a power-play goal in Friday’s 5-1 win over the Swiss.
Jordan Binnington and Logan Thompson have combined for 50 saves, posting a .980 save percentage. Before the tournament started, many viewed goaltending as a potential weakness for Canada; however, results have defied that expectation.
Offensively, Connor McDavid has led the way, contributing to 60 percent of Canada’s 10 goals. He has potted one power-play goal and boasts five assists. The Edmonton Oilers superstar is only the second player to record three or more points in consecutive games in an Olympic tournament involving NHL players, joining Finnish legend Teemu Selanne.
France is the only team without a point in this group after losing 4-0 to Switzerland and 6-3 to Czechia. After scoring three goals inside five minutes early in the second period, Yorick Treille’s team even took a 3-2 lead against Czechia on Friday, but quality prevailed in the end. On Sunday, the French will be happy to simply keep the score down.
