The New York Islanders will host the injury-hit Florida Panthers in a must-win game on Saturday at UBS Arena.
The Islanders are hoping to make it back into the playoffs after missing the postseason in 2025, but they can’t afford many mistakes down the stretch. Patrick Roy’s team currently holds the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, sitting just one point ahead of the Ottawa Senators.
In a close playoff race, wins over struggling teams like Florida are a must. The Panthers are back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, but they have battled injuries throughout the season and have lost any realistic hopes of returning to the postseason.
On Thursday, Florida suffered yet another injury blow when Evan Rodrigues broke his finger in a 3-2 home loss to the Minnesota Wild. He is expected to miss the rest of the season, joining 10 teammates on the shelf. The Panthers’ injury list includes star players Sam Reinhart, Aleksander Barkov, and Brad Marchand.
Having lost many of their big guns, winning has become very difficult for Paul Maurice’s team. Since February, Florida has celebrated only seven victories, while all of its 10 losses during this period have come in regulation.
