Last season, Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso's leadership had an excellent Champions League campaign, finishing sixth, but they were unable to overcome the all-German head-to-head tie against Bayern Munich, losing 5-0 on aggregate.

With a less powerful squad, ten Hag's management began, but it was unsuccessful, failing to win his first two Bundesliga matches. After this, the discontent of some Leverkusen players attracted Kasper Hjulmand, the Danish manager who managed Leverkusen's 3-1 victory against Frankfurt at the weekend.
