Carlos Alcaraz of Spain begins his quest to become a three-time Wimbledon Open champion on Monday when he takes on ATP veteran Fabio Fognini of Italy in the first round at the All-England Club.
Alcaraz returns at the All-England Club, aiming to become a three-time Wimbledon Open men’s singles champion and hold the French and Wimbledon Open titles simultaneously for two consecutive years. The last person to win the French-Wimbledon double for two straight years is Bjorn Borg, who did it for three successive years from 1978 to 1980. So far, Alcaraz has a strong chance of pulling the feat. The Spaniard recently won five straight matches on grass to win the title at Queen’s Club.
Fognini will have to pull off a massive upset against Alcaraz to end a five-game streak dating back from a second-round loss to Bu Yunchaokete 5-7, 2-6 at the Turin Challenger in early May. The 38-year-old Italian has a 25-26 record on grass, but is only 4-14 on the ATP Tour this year.
