The Edmonton Oilers continue an absolutely brutal road trip travel-wise when they face the Detroit Red Wings. Facing the three New York area teams in succession is standard for NHL travel, but the Oil now has to go from the Tri-State area to Michigan on a turnaround of less than 24 hours. What’s more, the Edmonton offense is struggling by its standards.
The Oilers are likely salivating at Tuesday’s matchup with Ottawa, given that the Senators have been a sieve in the early going. But before they can get to that juicy matchup, they’ve got to get past a Detroit defense that has played like a brick wall as of late. After giving up five goals to Montreal in the opener, the Wings have allowed just seven in their past four games.

The Red Wings have two very solid netminders in Cam Talbot and John Gibson. They know who they are and how they need to play, and that’s how they’ve started very well in the early going. Despite facing nothing but playoff teams from last year, the Wings have won four of five and shot to the top of the Atlantic Division.
And while Edmonton is dealing with New Jersey on Saturday afternoon and then getting on a plane to Michigan, Detroit is playing its third consecutive home game. The Wings haven’t had to travel since getting home from Toronto on Tuesday, and that matters. They’re likely to be the fresher team, and this is the perfect game for Edmonton to drop given the quick turnaround and the chance to break its slump two days later.
