The Detroit Tigers (48-50 SU, 48-50 ATS) play the second game of their series with the Toronto Blue Jays (44-53 SU, 47-50 ATS) after surviving another rough showing from the bullpen in the late innings. Toronto has teed off on Detroit’s bullpen all season, getting 20 runs in the final three innings in five games this year.
The bullpen is Reese Olson’s problem in this game, and for the most part, he’s handled things well as of late. In his past four starts, the Tigers are 3-1 and lost the other game in 10 innings. Usually, the Tigers can count on him to get to the sixth inning, which he’s done in eight of his past nine starts. One of those included Toronto, which he held to one unearned run in 6.1 innings in May.

Yusei Kikuchi really hasn’t been reliable for the Blue Jays as of late. He’s posted a 5.60 ERA in his past three starts and hasn’t made it past the fifth inning in four of his past six starts. He’s already seen the Tigers once this season, and that didn’t go well at all from an under perspective, as the teams combined to score 25 runs.
That’s not likely to happen again, but the teams’ unreliable bullpens mean that this total looks far too low. Olson is likely to put up a solid showing for the first few innings, but once he leaves the game, the floodgates are likely to open. With Kikuchi already showing himself far less than reliable and things getting no better when Toronto’s bullpen takes the hill, runs are likely to come.
