One of the more disappointing teams of the season to this point has been the Detroit Tigers (39-50). However, they have won 2 of their first 3 games this month, including going 1-1 in their current series with the Texas Rangers (45-44) after a win yesterday. Today, the series will be decided in game three.
The Tigers fan base had relatively high expectations going into this season, but after the start, they have tempered those expectations. On the season, they are hitting just .235 as a team, which is 24th in the league. Obviously, with the low combined batting average, it is no surprise that they have struggled to score runs as well. They are 20th in the league in that department. Their pitching has carried them to this point but without the run support, many good outings have been wasted. The Rangers have had some more success at the plate than their opponents this season.
The Rangers are 14th in combined batting average but have been worse in scoring runs. They rank 24th, which is worse than these Tigers on the season. Like their similarities in low run support, they have similar success with combined ERA. The Rangers are 10th in the league with a combined 3.97 ERA as a team.
