The Detroit Tigers (14-10 SU, 11-13 ATS) look to complete the sweep against the Tampa Bay Rays (12-13 SU, 9-16 ATS), who haven't gotten much out of their supposed home-field advantage. Despite the Rays playing nine of their past 12 games at Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay is just 5-7 SU during that stretch.
The Rays' biggest issue is that the bullpen isn't getting the job done this season. Tampa Bay's vaunted opener strategy only works when the Rays are actually getting good bullpen pitching, which has not yet occurred in 2024. Only Philadelphia and San Francisco have been worse than the Rays' bullpen ERA of 5.38. But Tampa Bay's going back to the opener again for this game with Shawn Armstrong, meaning the bullpen will have to be better if the Rays are going to avoid the sweep.

Detroit seems to be answering questions about its start. The Tigers hadn't exactly played a tough slate to start the year, getting the White Sox and Athletics along with the Mets. But they've done well in taking two off Tampa Bay, and they've been a robust 10-3 away from Comerica Park.
More importantly, Detroit's bullpen has the best ERA in the majors, and they have a reliable starter in Jack Flaherty. Flaherty has made four starts for Detroit and has not yet failed to get through six innings. Part of that could be because of the weak opponents he's faced (White Sox, Oakland and Minnesota twice), but the Tigers have faced the same questions and answered all of them. The Tigers believe that if they get to the seventh inning with the lead, the game is over, and the numbers bear that out. With Tampa Bay's bullpen struggling, a bullpen game isn't the way to go for them. Our prediction for Detroit vs. Tampa Bay is for the Tigers to win.
