The Detroit Tigers (55-60 SU, 59-56 ATS) attempt to complete the sweep of the Seattle Mariners (59-56 SU, 48-67 ATS), who have failed to take advantage of what was supposed to be a weak spot in the schedule. The Mariners were supposed to be on track after taking two of three from the Phillies to start August, but that hasn’t happened. Seattle is just 3-8 in its past 11 home games, and the Mariners have lost their lead in the AL West.
Detroit is kind of hanging out in no-man’s land for the time being. The Tigers would be very much in the thick of the playoff race if they played in the AL West, but they play in the AL Central, where they’re looking up at Cleveland, Minnesota and Kansas City. They’re not catching up to anyone for the wild card, which leaves them to simply play out the string and try to reach .500.

The Mariners’ biggest problem is that they haven’t been able to keep the Tigers’ bats silent. Seattle had this series set up the way it wanted with Luis Castillo and George Kirby, but it has not made a difference. Detroit has been the better team and exposed some real weaknesses with the Mariners.
Bryan Woo would seem to have the edge, especially with Detroit throwing a bullpen game, but he has only made it through four innings twice in his past six starts. A 1.08 ERA in his past three starts is impressive, but that stretch of starts included the slumping Phillies and the horrendous White Sox. That’s far less impressive than it appears, and Seattle is just 3-3 in Woo’s past six starts. However, Detroit’s bullpen is too inconsistent to trust. With the Tigers looking at a bullpen game, it’s best to go in another direction. Our prediction for Detroit vs. Seattle is Over 7.5 Runs.
