The Detroit Tigers (53-60 SU, 57-56 ATS) open their series with the Seattle Mariners (59-54 SU, 48-65 ATS) with a difficult pitching matchup. Facing Seattle almost always brings a difficult pitching matchup, as the Mariners have the lowest ERA in the American League. But the Tigers made things much tougher on themselves by throwing Keider Montero, who has spent the past month getting lit up by opponents coast-to-coast.
Since a 1-0 shutout of Cleveland, Montero has been frankly lucky that he hasn’t been sent back to Triple-A Toledo. He’s gotten bombed in his past four starts, giving up no fewer than four earned runs. The Tigers bailed him out once, but they’ve lost their past three with him on the hill and haven’t come particularly close in their past two attempts. Last time out against Kansas City, Montero did get through seven innings, but he allowed three runs in a 7-1 loss.

Seattle counters with Luis Castillo, who has been about as reliable as it gets. He hasn’t come out before the seventh inning in any of his past five starts, and he’s pitching beautifully at home. Three of his past five outings featured a total of three runs scored (granted, that’s partially because Seattle can’t hit), but the Mariners did give him runs when he needed them. In his last start, he was just OK, but the Mariners whacked Boston for 10 runs in a win.
Castillo holds a sparkling 2.82 ErA in home starts this season, and the Mariners seem to be catching the Tigers at the perfect time. Detroit might have been tough a month ago, when the Tigers still had realistic hopes of a run. These Tigers have given up on the year, and the numbers reflect that. Detroit is now 14.5 games back of Cleveland and 9.5 games behind Kansas City. In other words, it’s over in Michigan, and the Mariners should take full advantage.
