The Detroit Tigers (55-63 SU, 61-56 ATS) conclude their series with the San Francisco Giants ( 61-58 SU, 56-62 ATS), with the Giants looking for a sweep. San Francisco, simply by watching other teams collapse around it, has suddenly found itself right back in the playoff race. Two weeks after being left for dead, the Giants are just 1.5 games back of the Braves for the final playoff position
Detroit seems to have lost all of its motivation since the end of July. The Tigers did get two off Seattle on this road swing, but they've now lost three in a row and seem to have accepted that this will be another lost season in the Motor City. At 10 games back of the Royals and 27.5 games ahead of the White Sox, there's really nothing for Detroit to play for unless it cares about finishing above .500. Recent results say that isn't the case.

Up until his putrid performance in Washington last time out, Hayden Birdsong had been off to a fine start for his rookie season. That loss to the Nationals marked the first time he had allowed more than three earned runs in a start, as well as the first time he hadn't at least gotten to the fifth inning.
Birdsong is still a solid pitcher at home, and he's been more trustworthy than Keider Montero. Montero did look good against Seattle last time out, but he has lost three of his past four trips to the mound. Against Kansas City, Minnesota, Toronto and the Dodgers, Montero allowed 20 runs in 22.1 innings. He does a good job of eating innings, but he doesn't really give his team a great chance to win. As long as Birdsong doesn't pitch another dud, the Giants have the edge. Our pick for Detroit vs. San Francisco is for the Giants to win.
