The Tigers travel to Philadelphia for a series between two teams likely to be in the playoffs when they meet the Phillies.
The batting slump that troubled Tigers fans after the All-Star break, which saw them lose six straight games, appears to be behind them. They swept the D-backs at Comerica Park, tying the Blue Jays again for the best record in the American League. It was all smiles Wednesday as they completed the sweep against Arizona, beating them 7-2. Carpenter hit his 17th home run of the season and McKinstry his 16th double. But the biggest crowd was new acquisition Chris Paddack, who pitched six innings of one-run ball and struck out five.
On Thursday, the day the Tigers and Phillies rested, the Tigers announced two new bullpen additions: Paul Seawald and Rafael Montero.
Meanwhile, the Phillies surprisingly lost their series in Chicago against the White Sox. Ranger Suárez will pitch for the Phillies in Game 1 of the weekend series.
