The Detroit Tigers will attempt to start a new win streak on Saturday, when they resume their weekend series against the Kansas City Royals at Kaufmann Stadium.

The Tigers have strengthened their grip on the No.1 spot in the AL Central following a 5-3 win over the Royals in Friday’s series opener. Detroit ended its losing skid at four games after Detroit’s bullpen stepped up big time to bail out starter Chris Paddack, who gave up three earned runs over 3.2 innings. The Tigers have heavily relied on their relief pitchers in their last five games, during which Detroit’s starters have absolutely messed up with a 10.27 ERA. The Tigers’ bullpen, which carries a 4.45 ERA this season, has outperformed the starters with a 3.66 ERA in the stretch.

The Royals have dropped three games below .500 at 69-66 following Friday’s setback. The loss has also widened the Tigers’ lead on them to 9.5 games and kept them three games off the 72-63 Seattle Mariners, who hold the third and final wildcard spot in the American League. Over their last five games, Kansas City has registered a 5.11 ERA and 5.5 runs per game on a .251 batting average.
