The Detroit Tigers (77-73 SU, 81-69 ATS) face the Kansas City Royals (82-68 SU, 85-65 ATS) in a must-win game if they’re going to have any hope of charging into the playoff picture. Since getting left for dead at the deadline, Detroit has played excellent baseball. The Tigers not only caught and passed the Red Sox, but they pulled even with the Mariners and now have their sights on Minnesota for the AL’s final playoff spot.
The Royals’ goal here is simple: put the Tigers to bed. Detroit trails Kansas City by five games, and the Royals can basically put their season on cruise control if they can take out the Tigers. If that doesn’t happen, though, things get dicey. While the Royals still have to face good National League opponents in San Francisco and Atlanta, Detroit gets to finish the year against the White Sox. If they’re still alive when the final weekend comes around, they can be dangerous.

As long as Seth Lugo has his usual strong outing, however, the Royals should be able to keep the score in check. In Lugo’s past three starts, the game has seen exactly five runs score each time. Lugo himself has been a large reason; he’s allowed two runs or less in four of five starts and made it through seven all four times.
Detroit goes with a bullpen game, which should work out fine. The Tiger bullpen gives up a fair amount of hits because it gets used so often, but it has a robust 3.61 ERA as a whole. Detroit just shut down the Orioles, holding them to six runs in three games to take two of three in that series. In their past seven wins, the Tigers have allowed just 11 runs combined.
