The Detroit Tigers (50-51 SU, 51-50 ATS) face the Cleveland Guardians (59-40 SU, 50-49 ATS) in the second game of their early week series. For whatever reason, Detroit has seemed to play its best baseball against Cleveland, owning a winning record against the AL Central leaders. The Tigers’ success continued in the opener with an 8-2 win, and a sweep would give Detroit reason to think it’s right back in the playoff race.
That could be especially true if Cleveland continues its recent slump. The Guardians have gone just 3-8 in their past 11 games, including a 1-4 record against the Tigers. The All-Star break was supposed to allow the Guardians to reset and get back on track mentally, but they followed that with three defeats in four games. With Minnesota and Kansas City not going away, Cleveland cannot afford to let Detroit off the mat.

Xzavion Curry will likely serve as an opener with the Guardians getting into the heart of their MLB-best bullpen. Cleveland boasts a 2.56 ERA from its non-starters, and that’s been the one area where it’s been able to expect consistent success.
Detroit did touch up Cleveland for two runs off the bullpen last time out, and the Tigers have hit Cleveland well all season. In eight meetings between the squads, Detroit has averaged six runs a game and hit double digits on two occasions. With Casey Mize on the way back, the Tigers seem to understand the assignment.
