Between the Astros, Guardians, Tigers, and Red Sox, one of those teams will incredibly miss the postseason. However, conveniently for Houston and Cleveland, the Red Sox and Tigers are playing a three-game series against each other. Inevitably, either Boston or Detroit will lose two games, jeopardizing their playoff chances heading into the season finale.

If they are eliminated, the Tigers' second-half collapse will have to be studied, as they had a cushion of more than eight games over their division rivals going into the second half, so they blew that lead and are now tied with the Guards for the Central Division.

The Tigers are coming off another high-stakes series in which they failed to beat the Guards; prior to that, they had also been swept by Cleveland at Comerica Park. At Progressive Field, they lost the game 1 2-5, in which Skubal pitched. They lost the division lead by losing Game 2 1-5, but salvaged Game 3 of the series in Cleveland, with the Tigers winning 4-2 on solo home runs by Jones and Pérez, and Greene's 36th home run of the year.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, were coming off a Game 3 loss against the Blue Jays, allowing a grand slam by Varsho, but the Sox won the series: the first 4-1 thanks to an RBI double by Narváez, and the second 7-1 thanks to Crochet's dominance on the pitch.
