On Sunday, the 29-27-9, Pittsburgh Penguins will welcome the 33-27-6, Detroit Red Wings to PPG Paints Arena. It's been a poor season for the Penguins, looking set to miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Jake Guentzel is now a Carolina Hurricane and a team that was already struggling to keep up with younger legs has lost a key component. Sidney Crosby has shown again this season why he is one of the best of all time but at the age of 36, his days of carrying the team are over. The Pens have lacked consistency all season at both ends of the ice. Tristan Jarry has six shutouts to lead the league but he also has 11 games where he has shipped four or more. That includes a game in Detroit in October where he gave up four on 27 shots to take the loss.
In contrast, the Red Wings have produced their best season since 2015/16 when they last made the playoffs. They are right in the mix for a wildcard spot despite having a losing streak at a poor time, beaten seven times in a row at the time of writing. They still have a top-10 offense in terms of goal-scoring but they have a defense that is only ranked 23rd and that has caused them issues. In a recent four-game road trip, they were hit for seven by both the Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres, as well as conceding five at the Vegas Golden Knights and four at the Arizona Coyotes. The Red Wings continue without captain Dylan Larkin, whose absence has been a huge part of their recent slide in form.
