The Miami Heat will try to avoid getting the season off to a 0-2 start for the first time since the 2022-23 season, when they host the Detroit Pistons tonight. Fans can follow the action on NBA League Pass once it gets underway at the Kaseya Center in Miami, FL, at 8 p.m. EST.
Hopes are certainly high in Miami after an offseason that saw them acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee and sign Klay Thompson via free agency. But while Miami has a promising group, it ran into a team it isn't ready to compete with: the Minnesota Timberwolves, hence the 131-106 loss. With talents like the aforementioned players, Andrew Wiggins, and Bam Adebayo, the Heat will be a dangerous team once they gel.
As for Detroit, the Pistons added a few players to shore up an already solid roster in John Collins, Isaiah Joe, and Taurean Prince. However, they also lost several players, i.e., Tobias Harris, Cris LeVert, and Marcus Sasser. They improved their 3-point scoring, but may have done so at the expense of their frontcourt depth. But after falling behind 58-45 in the first half in their opener against Boston, they came back in the second to win 121-113.

Detroit maintained its young core and should be in good shape for the season overall, but defense and rebounding depth could cost them down the line. Miami should be the better team on paper, but it doesn't look like it has figured out how to play like a team yet. The Pistons, on the other hand, figured out how to adjust against a good Boston team and overcame a double-digit halftime deficit. A month from now, I may think differently. But in the second game of the season for both teams, Detroit is better positioned to win today.
