This is one of Wednesday’s must-watch matches on the international stage. One of the last teams to qualify for the World Cup faces a strong European side that won’t be competing this summer. It’s the Democratic Republic of the Congo taking on Denmark in Liège. And the Congolese are in top form on the world stage! After making it through the playoffs, Chancel Mbemba and his teammates gained a huge confidence boost following their victory over Jamaica last March. Sébastien Desabre’s team has improved defensively, allowing them to start the competition with a strong sense of confidence. After two straight wins, the goal is to make it three in a row against one of Europe’s many Nordic nations.

Denmark, for its part, is going through a much tougher stretch. Just one win in four matches for the Danish Dynamite and eight goals conceded in their last four outings for the red and white. Having failed to qualify for the World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to the Czech Republic, Riemer and his men need to get back on track ahead of upcoming fixtures, such as the Nations League this coming September. There isn’t necessarily an offensive problem, but the Danes will need to rebuild their defensive foundation, and that’s exactly what this type of match is for. Frustration is in the air, but Denmark must not let itself be discouraged by failing to qualify for the World Cup.
