Coco Gauff of the United States is set to play Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in a fascinating third-round matchup at the 2025 Canadian Open on Thursday.
Gauff had to go through a tiebreaker in the third set to stave off Danielle Rose Collins 7-5 4-6 7-6(2) in action-packed second-round duel on Tuesday. Playing in her first match since bowing to Dayana Yastremska 6 (3)-7, 1-6 in the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon Open, the former US Open champion looked rusty and out of rhythm throughout, committing 23 double faults and conceding 9 breakpoints. Despite the ugly numbers, Gauff managed to hack out the close win by breaking nine times and scoring the crucial points in the tiebreaker.
Kudermetova earned her spot in the third round after besting Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-4 6-2. The Russian never conceded a breakpoint in the match, capturing 18 points off her first and second serves. She also broke thrice with only 10 return points to ensure a quick win over the Serbian.
