The Connecticut Sun (0-0) visit the New York Liberty (0-0) in the 2026 WNBA season opener on Friday, May 8, at Barclays Center.
These two teams were on different trajectories last season. The Liberty finished the regular season as the Top 2 team in the Eastern Conference, while the Sun was again a bottom-feeder. The Liberty did lose in the first round of the playoffs, but they're still the far superior team.
New York would want to do better than a first-round postseason exit, but they might have trouble early on. They won't have star guard Sabrina Ionescu and forward Satou Sabally on Friday.
Ionescu, who averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists last season, is still recovering from an ankle injury. Meanwhile, Sabally is dealing with an illness that will keep her sidelined. The Liberty will surely miss her balanced production of 16.3 points and 5.9 boards.
This means that New York will again rely heavily on their veteran frontcourt stalwart Breanna Stewart. The two-time MVP is coming off her seventh-straight All-Star appearance, having averaged 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks last year.
Stewart will face off against star center Brittney Griner. The Sun added Griner in free agency to toughen up their frontcourt depth.
