The Philadelphia Flyers (31-23-11) trail the Columbus Blue Jackets (33-21-11) by just 4 points for 4th place in the Metro Division. They will meet Saturday evening in Philly for what will be the 2nd time this season. Their initial meeting took place in late January when the Blue Jackets picked up a 5-3 home victory. After taking a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period, the Blue Jackets saw their lead erased with just under 5 minutes to play. Sean Monahan put one in just over a minute later, and Mathieu Olivier added an empty netter to seal the deal.
After starting the month with a 3-game winning streak, the Blue Jackets have struggled lately. They dropped 3 of their last 4 games and have allowed 14 goals over that same stretch. That said, they are coming off a 2-1 loss to Florida, where their defense and goaltending did well, but the offense failed to get the job done. If they could make the most of their better defensive efforts, the Blue Jackets would be a very dangerous team.
Philly has won 3 of their last 4 games and hope to pick up their 3rd win in a row, if they are able to defeat Columbus on Saturday night. Samuel Ersson stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced against Washington in a 4-1 win on Wednesday. Dan Vladar followed up Ersson’s performance by stopping 21 of the 23 shots he faced in the 3-2 win over Minnesota on Thursday night.
If Philly’s goaltenders can stay hot, they have a shot at moving up in the division standings over the final part of this regular season.
