Although the Pirates-Rockies series in Colorado was probably the Pirates' highest-hitting series of the entire year, they still lost that series 1-2. In the follow-up at PNC Park, Pittsburgh took advantage of the high ERA of opposing pitcher Sensatela, who was removed from the game after just 4 innings of action.

The Pirates won 9-0 in Game 1, although the home runs came after they had already built a lead. Horwitz hit his sixth of the year, and Pham hit his seventh of the season. It was a six-double game for the Pirates, while Ashcraft again produced a strong outing as a pitcher, improving his record to 4-2; he pitched 5 scoreless innings.

Once again, the Rockies were coming off a strong hitting streak in their previous series in Colorado but failed to do so on the road. Colorado produced a poor hitting night with just three hits, recording just one walk and striking out 9 times.
