Club Tijuana plays Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Leagues Cup play against the Colorado Rapids. Colorado is riding high after it beat Santos Laguna 2-1 last weekend in league opening play. Down early in the second period in that game, the Rapids stormed back with Rafael Navarro’s double of goals in order to grab all three points.

This continued Colorado’s run of upsetting Liga MX clubs – a trend it began in last year’s Leagues Cup, as it defeated four Mexican clubs en route to finishing third. At home, the Rapids have not fared well in MLS action (currently bottom of the Western Conference), but they have had experience of bucking their form in cup competition under coach Chris Armas.

Club Tijuana, on the other hand, would be looking forward to getting back on track after having tasted a bruising defeat in their opening match of the Leagues Cup. The Xolos were thrashed 5-2 by the LA Galaxy last Thursday, as their defense was repeatedly violated.

Tijuana rallied twice to draw in the match through two long-range efforts by 16-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora, but ended up crumbling in the final 30 minutes. The loss was part of the continuation of a difficult year for Tijuana, as it concluded near the bottom of the table in Liga MX in the past campaign.

The club is under new management with Sebastián “Loco” Abreu taking the helm, and he will be looking for his first major win as Xolos coach to keep their Leagues Cup campaign alive.
