Central Division foes will meet on Saturday afternoon when the top team in the league, the Colorado Avalanche (44-11-9), visits the Winnipeg Jets (26-28-10). Despite being in the same division, the teams have only faced each other once this year. It was back in December in Colorado, and the Avalanche picked up a 3-2 victory. The Avs used a 2-0 1st period to gain control early and were able to hold off the Jets, who had cut it to 1 goal early in the 3rd.
Winnipeg is hoping to avoid a losing streak as they have lost their last 2 games in a row. A 4-1 loss to Anaheim on Tuesday was followed by a 6-3 loss to the Rangers on Thursday. Connor Hellebuyck, who was outstanding in the Olympics, was in the net for both of the Jets’ most recent losses. He will likely be in the net once again against the Avs, and rarely does he have 3 straight poor showings in net.
The Avalanche have continued to play superior hockey as the month of March has rolled on. They are 5-1 in the month after rattling off 4 straight to kick things off after the Olympics break. Their one hiccup came against Edmonton on Tuesday, where they gave up 2 power-play goals. They bounced back nicely on Thursday night, where they dominated the Kraken 5-1 on the road. Nathan MacKinnon scored a goal to go with his 3 assists in the win.
Scott Wedgewood is slated to be in the net for the Avalanche, and he has been stellar over his last 5 starts. Between he and Hellebuyck, goals could come at a serious premium in this one.
