The Texas Rangers have lost in the last four starts of Jack Leiter. On Sunday, Leiter is scheduled to hit the mound again, taking on the Cleveland Guardians at Globe Life Field.
The Rangers are listed as -132 favorites ahead of Game 2 against the Guardians. Texas is eyeing its third win in four games, still trying to stay relevant in the American League wild-card race. Right now, Texas (64-66) is still one of the teams – including the Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals – seeking to dislodge the Seattle Mariners (69-60), who currently occupy the last wild card spot. On the positive news, the Rangers will likely get back the service of veteran outfielder Adolis Garcia, who will be reinstated from the 10-day injury list due to an ankle injury.
The Guardians have lost their last three games and four of their last five games. Like the Rangers, this team is also fighting to earn a wild-card spot in the American League. Texas has not won a game in Jack Leiter’s last four starts, but I am optimistic that Leiter and the Rangers are about to break this slump on Saturday against the Guardians, who are only averaging 3.3 runs per game in their last five games. Although the Rangers are not that much better offensively, as they average just 3.9 runs per game in their last five games, the Guardians have been blowing leads late in the game since losing the service of Emmanuel Clase to a non-disciplinary leave (under MLB investigation for alleged involvement in sports betting). Clase, an All-Star pitcher, has recorded 24 saves and a 3.23 ERA this season.
Logan Allen, the scheduled starter for the Guardians on Saturday, is a serviceable pitcher with a 3.21 ERA in his last five starts. Then again, with Cleveland barely averaging three runs a game and missing their best closer, the Rangers, who are 5-2 in their last 7 games when playing at home against Cleveland, seem like a solid pick to win and cover a -1.5 spread.
