The first game of the season and the Mariners-Guardians series in Seattle was an entertaining one, which Cleveland, managed by Vogt, won 6-4, despite being the underdogs. On Friday, these teams, expected to contend at the top of their respective divisions, clash again, with Gavin Williams starting for the Guardians and George Kirby for the Mariners.
In the first game of the series, DeLauter played the hero. With two home runs, he's already showing he wants to be Rookie of the Year. He hit two home runs in his major league debut, the first in the first inning and the second a 422-foot blast to give the Guardians the lead. Cade Smith, who will serve as the Guards' closer this year, retired the side in order, striking out one.
The Mariners had less than half the hits the Guardians had in the opening game, but they hit the ball hard, with Donovan, Canzone, and Raley all hitting solo home runs. Kirby doesn't have great numbers against Cleveland, with a 5.11 ERA and an 0-1 record in five starts against them.
