The Cleveland Guardians (31-22) and the Philadelphia Phillies (25-26) play game two of their 3 game series this afternoon in Philly. The Guardians took game one in a low-scoring affair.
Cristopher Sanchez of the Phillies looked tremendous once again. Coming off a complete game shutout, Sanchez tossed 8 innings of no-run ball while allowing just 4 hits. However, closer Jhoan Duran gave up a solo home run to Kyle Manzardo in the top of the 9th that would be the difference.
Gavin Williams of the Guardians had an even stronger game than Sanchez. He did the same amount of work and allowed the same number of hits, but struck out 11 to Sanchez’s 6 batters. After scoring in the 9th, the Guardians brought in closer Cade Smith, who batted down the top of the Phillies lineup to get the save and secure the win.
Today, the Phillies should have a decisive advantage on the mound. Zach Wheeler will face off with Slade Cecconi. Wheeler is 3-0 since coming back from injury and is carrying a 1.99 ERA. Cecconi is just 3-4 on the season and has an ERA of over 5.00. The Phillies' bats that were quiet yesterday should have ample opportunities to get some runs here against Cecconi.
