The Reds have now lost five straight. Francona's team has had a one-win June so far. Their recent lack of focus was evident in their latest loss to the Padres, where they misplayed three consecutive bunts in the seventh inning and ended up losing the game 2-6.

Cincinnati also showed a tremendous lack of ability to bring runners into scoring position, going 1-for-7 on Monday in those situations. The Reds' collective batting average is the fifth worst in MLB at .231. Francona recently removed slugger Eugenio Suárez from the lineup; the Venezuelan is not putting up the expected numbers since his return to Cincinnati, and his reinstatement to the lineup on Monday resulted in a 0-for-4 performance with a strikeout. To make matters worse, Cincinnati is without Elly de La Cruz due to a hamstring injury; the Dominican will be re-evaluated on Friday.

The Padres started the series against the Reds with a win. This comes after they lost the previous series against the Mets and fell to third place in the division. Despite Monday's victory, in which Samad Taylor went 2-for-4, the left-hander commented that San Diego's offense only works sporadically and that this isn't enough to ignite a serious offense.
