The Cincinnati Reds (38-42) kicked off their weekend series in Pittsburgh with a win over the Pirates (41-41) last night. After taking an early 4-1 lead, the Reds allowed the Pirates to come back and tie things up as they headed into the 8th inning. Noelvi Marte broke the tie with a 2-run home run that was ultimately the difference. Caleb Ferguson was able to close things out in the 9th and picked up his 1st save of the season.
Before the win, the Reds had been swept at home by the Milwaukee Brewers. They lost by a total of just 4 runs, so it was encouraging that they were able to close the door on the Pirates last night after giving up the lead.
Pittsburgh had been playing good ball before the loss. They had won 3 of their last 4 and had posted 24 runs total in those 3 wins. They were not able to put up enough runs last night and will be tested tonight against a strong pitcher from the Reds.
Chase Burns is that strong pitcher for the Reds. He is 9-1 on the year and has an impressive 2.00 ERA. He has only allowed more than 2 runs once this season, and that came back in early April.
