The Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets are set for game two of their weekend series, with both teams firmly entrenched in the National League playoff conversation. On Friday, the Reds came out swinging, taking an 8-4 win in the opener and gaining crucial ground in the Wild Card race. Cincinnati has picked up momentum in recent weeks and now sits just 2.5 games behind the third and final NL Wild Card spot. A strong showing against the Mets could help them inch closer to postseason contention.
For the Mets, Friday’s loss was a disappointing start to the second half of the season. New York finished the first half inconsistently, dropping three of their last five games, including a series finale against the Royals in Kansas City.
Despite the stumble, they remain in second place in the National League East, trying to keep pace with the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies. With plenty of games left on the calendar, the Mets are still within striking distance but will need to tighten up in key matchups like this one.

On the mound, Cincinnati will send right-hander Nick Martinez to the hill. Martinez has had a rollercoaster of a season, going 7-9 over 21 appearances, including eight quality starts.
While he's shown flashes of effectiveness, he’s struggled on the road, posting a 2-5 record and an ERA nearing 5.00 in away games. The Reds will need a solid outing from Martinez to fend off a Mets offense that’s beginning to get healthier and more experienced with several veteran hitters returning to the lineup.
The Mets will counter with right-hander Clay Holmes, who has been one of their more dependable starters this year. Holmes enters the game with an 8-4 record through 19 starts and a respectable 3.16 ERA at home. He’s been particularly strong at Citi Field, going 4-1 on the year when pitching in front of the home crowd.
