The Cincinnati Reds will go for win No.2 in their series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.
The Reds took the opening game of their series with the Cubs after TJ Friedl drove a tiebreaking run in the 7th inning for a 3-2 win. Cincinnati’s pitching, particularly its bullpen, did a terrific job holding off the Cubs after starter Nick Lodolo left the game in the second inning with blisters. Relief pitcher Scott Barlow earned the win for logging two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Cincinnati improved their record to 59-54, third in the NL Central.
As for the Cubs, Monday’s setback marked their second loss in three games. Chicago now trails the 68-44 Milwaukee Brewers by three games as the race for an outright playoff spot continues to heat up. The Cubs have just had one of their best stretches of pitching this season, posting a 2.60 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in their last five games. It’s a different story on offense, though, as the Cubs only average 4.4 runs per game on a .231 batting average in the same stretch.
