The Chicago White Sox (7-26 SU, 15-18 ATS) visit the St. Louis Cardinals (15-18 SU, 18-15 ATS) in an attempt to win a series for just the second time this season. The White Sox expected to be one of the worst teams in baseball this season, and they have more than lived up to that expectation. However, they’ve actually proven a decent bet on the run line because of their tendency to play close games.
St. Louis appeared to be turning a corner after taking two of three from the Mets at the end of April. Since then, they’ve gone in the wrong direction, losing a series to the Tigers and blowing a two-run lead on Saturday to the Sox. The Cardinals’ pitching has been serviceable, but their inconsistent lineup usually leads to wasted opportunities. At 117 runs, only the White Sox have scored fewer runs this year than St. Louis.

With St. Louis turning to a bullpen game, it’s tough to trust the Cardinals at their current price. The bullpen has been serviceable for St. Louis, but the lack of runs generated means they’re always in danger of playing a tight game.
Chicago is also difficult to trust because starter Garrett Crochet hasn’t gotten many outs away from the South Side. The Pale Hose are just 1-6 with him on the mound, and his three road starts have turned into quite the adventure. In three away starts, Crochet’s ERA is 10.50, and he got tagged for 12 earned runs in his past seven innings of work. However, those starts came against Philadelphia and Minnesota, both of whom are swinging hot bats and generate a lot of offense. St. Louis isn’t anywhere near as threatening at the plate as the Phillies or Twins. Because of that, our prediction for Chicago vs. St. Louis is White Sox +1.5.
