The Cubs swept the Dodgers and won the series in Kansas City against the Royals, bringing their August record to 7-2. Now they face a crucial series against the Nationals as they look to solidify their position as the NL's first wild card.
The Nationals, meanwhile, remain a surprising team, averaging 5.4 runs per game, the best in MLB in that category. However, their disastrous bullpen has been the main obstacle to maintaining a winning percentage above .500. Two of their key sluggers are missing from the lineup: Luis García, traded to the Yankees, and Wood, on 10-day injury leave. Even so, these unpredictable Nats swept the Reds in D.C. In that series, the bullpen surprisingly did deliver.
Even so, with odds of -170 still favoring the Cubs, Chicago will be the favorite for the first game of Tuesday's series. It's mainly about Japanese starter Imanaga gradually regaining his ace form, allowing two or fewer earned runs in his last seven starts.
