The Chicago Cubs (7-6 SU, 8-5 ATS) look to continue to ride first-year pitcher Shota Imanaga, who makes his third MLB start against the Seattle Mariners (6-8 SU, 5-9 ATS). So far, Imanaga has lived up to his nickname of the "Throwing Philosopher" by getting outs with his repertoire rather than trying to overpower everyone. His start against the Dodgers showed that he doesn't need to miss bats to be effective, as he gave up no runs in four innings while striking out just three.
But the strikeouts will probably come against Seattle, which has shown no patience at the plate. The Mariners have pitched well enough to succeed, but their .599 OPS ranks second-worst in the majors. Only Miami has been worse at getting on base, and only the Dodgers strike out more often. But Los Angeles makes up for its strikeouts with big hits when it makes contact; Seattle doesn't punish teams that way.

Seattle pitcher Emerson Hancock hasn't shown enough consistency to expect a big game from the Mariners. In his last start, he lasted 88 pitches because the Brewers whacked him for 11 hits and eight runs. He pitched better against Cleveland, but the Guardians haven't been known for hitting for a while and he still allowed three runs.
For his career, Hancock has a 1.60 WHIP, which just doesn't cut it at the major league level. He's going to have to do much better at getting outs by learning how to pitch. The Cubs are patient hitters and should punish any mistakes. Imanaga appears to have that lesson well in hand and should get a fair amount of support from his offense here. With the Mariners barely getting on base and Imanaga looking sharp, our prediction for Chicago vs. Seattle is for the Cubs to win.
