The Chicago Cubs (22-16) will begin their road trip Friday night when they visit the Pittsburgh Pirates (17-21). The Cubs are 4-4 in the month of May and coming off a shutout loss to the Padres on Wednesday. The Cubbies could not find a way to get to Dylan Cease, who struck out 12 over 7 shutout innings. The Pirates are just 3-4 in May and are also coming off a loss. After being shutout 9-0 on Tuesday, they lost again Wednesday 5-4 to the Angels. After leading 4-2 through 5 innings, the Angels put up 3 in the 6th which were the last runs to be scored. Youngster, Javier Assad (3-0, 1.66) will be on the mound for the Cubs. He threw 6 shutout innings and struck out 4 while walking 3 in his last start which came against the Brewers. The Pirates will turn to Jared Jones (2-3, 2.63), who has struck out 52 while walking just 5 this season. He struck out 10 in 7 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his latest start. Both teams have had struggles at the plate as both rank no better than 20th in the league. On the other side, both teams rank inside the Top 15 in combined ERAs.
