The bats finally woke up for the Philadelphia Phillies (8-8) in last night’s game against the Chicago Cubs (7-9). After averaging just 2.5 runs per game over their last 8 games, the Phillies got hot and lit up Javier Assad of the Cubs for 9 runs on 11 hits in just over 4 innings. While the 12-2 lead that the Phillies built seemed to be enough, things did get a little dicey when reliever Seth Johnson came in and allowed 5 runs in the 8th. However, Orion Kerkering was able to come in and shut the door on any comeback bid by the Cubs.
The loss the 3rd for Chicago in their last 4 games. They came into this series with the Phillies having lost 2 of 3 against the Pirates in their weekend series. For game two here in Philly, the Cubs will throw a bullpen start. Riley Martin is set to open things, but has not pitched more than 1.1 innings thus far this season and has yet to make a start. He has been good in his relief role, but this will not be the same atmosphere he is used to.
Veteran Aaron Nola will be tasked with the start for the Phillies in this one. Nola has pitched well through his 1st three starts of the season, despite his 1-1 record. He has allowed just 5 hits in each of his starts and not given up more than 3 runs yet. Now, he will face the weakest lineup he has faced to date in the Cubs.
A steady outing from Nola here could be all that is needed if these Phillies’ bats stay hot against the bullpen start of the Cubs.
