The Chicago Cubs (51-58 SU, 50-59 ATS) attempt to salvage their series with the Cincinnati Reds (52-55 SU, 59-48 ATS) after dropping the first two games. The Cubs have failed to win four of their past five series, even though they haven’t been swept in any of them.
The Cubs have only gotten the job done when the offense has produced, as they have failed to score more than three runs in nine of their past 11 games. Unsurprisingly, the two exceptions against Kansas City marked the only time that they successfully won a series since beating Baltimore three weeks ago. The Cubs haven’t hit much at all at Great American Ball Park this season, scoring just 17 runs in six games in Cincinnati in 2024.

Nick Lodolo doesn’t usually inspire confidence on the mound at home, but he knows what he’s doing against the Cubs. In consecutive starts against Chicago in June, Lodolo gave up just three runs in 12 innings, putting both starts in the win column. He hasn’t pitched particularly well at home in his past three starts, but he looked good last time out against Tampa Bay.
Kyle Hendricks has mostly been victimized by his team’s lack of offense. The Cubs have given him one run or less of support in five of his past six starts, and he’s taken the loss all five times. The one time where he picked up a win was a seven-inning game against St. Louis, in which he appeared to figure that he had to do it all himself. If Chicago was hitting well, this would be a spot to take the Cubs, but the offense doesn’t appear to have this figured out at all. Our prediction for Chicago vs. Cincinnati is for the Reds to win.
