The Chicago Cubs (57-60 SU, 55-62 ATS) become the latest team to get the near-bye week that is the Chicago White Sox (28-89 SU, 50-66 ATS), as they come down the Red Line to face their crosstown rival. The White Sox did finally end their 21-game losing streak with a win in Oakland, but they’ve still been pretty close to helpless for most of this season.
The Pale Hose have just one home win since June, and they have a total of four wins over the past six weeks. They did hit the Cubs pretty well in their two meetings two months ago at Wrigley Field, but the results ended up the same: the North Siders claimed victory both times. However, series openers have been a problem for the Cubs as of late: they are just 2-4 in their past six series openers.

Other than one poor showing at Cincinnati, Jameson Taillon has been fairly reliable for the Cubs. He isn’t a big strikeout pitcher, but he will provide around six innings most times he takes the mound. Out of his past 10 starts, eight of them saw him complete the sixth inning, and a ninth saw him come one out shy.
Garrett Crochet doesn’t tend to go as long as Taillon does, but he has been effective when he’s taken the mound. If he played for a better team, he would likely have a much better record than 6-8. As it is, he’s been fairly reliable for the White Sox when he takes the mound. The problem occurs when he leaves the game and hands things over to the bullpen. Even though Crochet has only given up more than two runs twice in his past 10 starts, the White Sox have lost eight starts in a row of his because they can’t count on the bullpen. Because of that, it’s better to get in and get out. Our prediction for the battle of Chicago is Under 3.5 Runs for the First Five Innings.
