The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox game that was originally scheduled for Sunday has been moved to Friday afternoon and will be the 1st of a double-header. This will begin the final series for each team in the regular season, but both are likely to head to the postseason.
This 4-game series is a bit more meaningful for the Chicago Cubs. They are currently 1 game back of the Padres for the top wild card spot and 1 game ahead of the Phillies for the last wild card spot. Meaning, every game in this 4-game series could shift where the Cubs end up seeded. They will lean on Clay Holmes to start the 1st game of the double-header today. And things have not been great for him lately. He has allowed 17 runs over his last 3 starts and is likely to need heavy run support in this one.
Boston is not in as fluid a spot as the Cubs in terms of their seeding. They are currently 7 games back of the Yankees for the top wild card spot and have a solid 3 game lead on the White Sox for the final spot. They are essentially locked in to that 2nd wild card spot. So, in this opening game, they are opting to have a bullpen start. Reliever Alec Gambos is set to start and likely will pitch just a single inning.
