In a big Metropolitan Division clash, the Washington Capitals will host the Carolina Hurricanes at Capital One Arena on Saturday.
The Capitals have struggled since the holiday break, winning only eight games, but they are carrying some momentum into this weekend. On Thursday night, Washington beat one of the Eastern Conference's top dogs, the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3 in a shootout.
Spencer Carbery’s team will now try to post back-to-back wins for the first time since early December. It could be a difficult task, as both Capitals netminders are battling health issues. Logan Thompson was unavailable on Thursday due to an upper-body injury, and Charlie Lindgren played through a lower-body injury in the shootout.
Carolina has been banged up for most of the campaign, but the team has still played high-level hockey and is battling for first place in the East. Rod Brind’Amour’s team has finished without a point just once in the past 12 games, winning nine of the matchups.
Under Brind’Amour, the Hurricanes have been known as a disciplined defensive team, but the offense has exploded recently. Carolina’s recent run of good results includes a 9-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils, and the team opened this week with an entertaining 5-4 win over the Utah Mammoth.
