In a top-of-the-table clash in the Metropolitan Division, the Washington Capitals will host the Carolina Hurricanes at the Capital One Arena on Thursday.
The two divisional rivals meet for the second time this season, with only one point separating them. Washington sits at the top of the pile in the Metropolitan Division with 39 points in 30 games, while Carolina is placed second with 38 points in 39 games.
Washington beat Carolina 4-1 in their first meeting last month and is expected to triumph again, as the teams have been heading in different directions over the last four weeks.
Since defeating the Hurricanes in Raleigh on Nov. 11, the Capitals have dropped only four games, and their hot streak includes a six-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have mostly alternated wins and losses, never winning more than two games in a row.
Washington's most recent results are particularly impressive, as the team has been without John Carlson for three games. The Capitals' No. 1 defenseman practiced fully on Wednesday and is anticipated to be back in the lineup against Carolina. His return could give Spencer Carbery's side another jolt of momentum.

Our Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes Prediction
The Capitals have been hugely impressive on both ends of the ice, and even injuries can't seem to slow the team down. With Alex Ovechkin still banging them in, Washington averages the third-most goals in the NHL, and the team also holds the second-best defensive record.
Carolina also has good offensive numbers, averaging the fifth-most goals in the league. However, the team has many flaws. They have struggled badly on special teams, and goaltending is a constant worry for Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour. Currently, Carolina holds a lowly .893 save percentage.
Our prediction for Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals: Capitals to win.
