As the host country for this first week of VNL competition, Canada won’t want to disappoint its home crowd. Coming off a solid 2025 World Championship run, where they reached the Round of 16 after notably eliminating Japan in the group stage before holding their own against powerhouse Poland, Team Canada, led by Dan Lewis (head coach of Poitiers in France’s Ligue A), is aiming high to secure as many points as possible in these opening home matches and position itself for a spot in the top 8. The Canadians have plenty to offer, with several top-tier outside hitters like Jack Young, Skyler Varga, and Brodie Hofer capable of making a difference at the net. While a lack of experience may still be a weakness, this Canadian team has what it takes to give many opponents a run for their money in Ottawa, starting with Germany on opening day.

Finishing 14th last year in the Volleyball Nations League and then being eliminated in the group stage at the World Championships, Germany had a disappointing 2025, having come so close to securing a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 Olympics. Yet the Mannschaft has talent at every position, starting with its star outside hitter, the legendary György Grozer, as well as its opposite hitter Erik Röhrs and middle blocker Anton Brehme. But the team failed to gel last year, and this year, head coach Massimo Botti hopes to find the solutions to bring Germany back to the forefront.
