Canada will start its pursuit of a 10th Olympic gold medal in men’s ice hockey on Thursday, facing Czechia at PalaItalia Santa Giulia in Milan.
Stacked with NHL superstars, Canada is the clear favorite to take home gold and could try to make a statement in the tournament opener. Czechia has lost five consecutive games to Team Canada, though Radim Rulik’s team managed to take them to overtime at the 2024 World Championships.
Canada’s players have combined for 16,680 NHL games and scored 1,060 points this season. With talent throughout the lineup, the team looks ready to outscore any opponent.
For Czechia, around half of the roster comes from the NHL, with 8,114 games between them. The team lost Pavel Zacha before the tournament, but the offense, led by Zacha’s Boston teammate David Pastrnak and Colorado’s Martin Necas, could be hard to stop if it finds its rhythm.
Czechia won the World Championships in 2024 and will be eager to make up for the team’s shortcomings in 2022. With no NHL stars on the squad, Team Czechia struggled to score in Beijing, finishing ninth -- their worst placement in an Olympic tournament.

Our Czechia vs Canada Prediction
Jon Cooper has an extraordinary amount of individual talent at his disposal, but the Canadians might struggle to find team chemistry in the first few games. This will favor Czechia, which will likely play a defensive-first style on Thursday to keep the score close for as long as possible.
With a well-equipped Swiss side also in Group A, slip-ups could be costly, potentially affecting Canada’s approach in the game and making them conservative at times. The team has a high-octane offense but also boasts a lot of defensive quality, making scoring against them difficult.
Our prediction for Czechia vs. Canada: Under 6.0 goals.
