by Bradley Gibbs in AFCON Picks
After Mali and Senegal battle it out in the first of Friday’s matches, the second quarter final of the African Cup of Nations will get underway. Featuring the tournament hosts, it’s a battle between Cameroon and Morocco.
Although they finished level on points with Ivory Coast, the Cameroonians did not top their group, which meant that they were up against a very decent South African team during the Round of 16. Thanks to goals from Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane, they got the job done and now have the tough task of facing the Moroccans, who continue to be the favorites to go all the way.
The Atlas Lions have certainly roared on home soil, winning their group without ever really coming under any serious pressure, while they got the job done against Tanzania in very sturdy fashion, keeping their third clean sheet in four matches.

Cameroon - Morocco: Form Analysis
It’s not too easy to criticize what we’ve seen from the Cameroonians in Morocco. They’ve shown a little bit of everything, offering more than a little in terms of offensive quality, while they’ve also shown the ability to hang in there against decent teams, avoiding defeat against the Ivory Coast, which is not easy to do. The Indomitable Lions have also defended strongly, conceding no more than a single goal in any of their four games.
The Indomitable Lions have also defended strongly, conceding no more than a single goal in any of their four games.
Keeping teams quiet is also something that the Moroccans have done. In fact, nobody has stopped their opponents from getting serious in the final third quite like the Atlas Lions, who’ve only conceded one goal at this tournament. They’ve also conceded impressive expected goals totals of 0.31, 0.91, 0.24 and 0.73. They can definitely halt teams, while they have star quality at the other end, with Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz looking particularly dangerous.

Cameroon & Morocco Squad Analysis
Cameroon boss David Pagou may not be able to call upon the services of Carlos Baleba. The EPL midfielder, who is an important cog in the midfield machine, recently picked up a knock and could miss out. There are also doubts over the fitness of Darlin Yongwa.
It’s also likely that Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, who scored twice against Zambia during the group stages, will miss out with a calf problem.
Romain Saiss is a potential absentee for Morocco. The vastly experienced and versatile defender/midfielder went off injured against Comoros and has not yet returned to the field for the Atlas Lions. It’s also likely that Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, who scored twice against Zambia during the group stages, will miss out with a calf problem. Main man Achraf Hakimi played 90 minutes at the tournament for the first time against Tanzania during the Round of 16 and is expected to feature prominently again.

Our Cameroon vs Morocco Prediction
When push comes to shove, the tournament hosts should have the quality to get over the line here, but we probably shouldn't expect them to batter a Cameroon team that looks quite sturdy. The Indomitable Lions haven't conceded too many goals, but they also haven't looked too threatening offensively, which is a problem against the sturdiest of Moroccan teams.
So far at this tournament, the Atlas Lions have created the impression that they're all about getting the job done. They know how to grind out wins wihtout giving much away, while they won't want to overdo it, with bigger tasks ahead, so do not be surprised if it's another relatvively low-scoring win recorded by the hosts.
Our Cameroon vs Morocco Pick: Morocco to Win & Under 3.5 Goals.
