In the UBS Arena on Saturday night, teams that are heading in two opposite directions will meet. The New York Islanders (37-23-5) are currently tied for 2nd in the Metro Division, and their opponents, the Calgary Flames (26-32-7) are near the bottom of the Pacific Division. These two met in mid-January, where the Flames came out victorious. They led from the jump and took a commanding 4-0 lead midway through the 2nd period. The Islanders fought back and scored 2 unanswered goals, but it was not enough.
It has been rough for the Flames since the break provided by the Olympics. Calgary has been outscored 32-17 in their 7 games since the break. Their record is just 2-5 in March, and now they are in the middle of a grueling 5-game road trip. That said, the offense did get going in their last game. They put up 5 goals against the Devils and picked up a 5-4 win. John Beecher scored 2 of his 3 goals in the win over New Jersey. The Flames will need scoring like that once again here on the road in New York.
The Islanders have fared better since their break. They were carrying a 3-2 record this month and were hoping to pick up their 3rd win in a row, last night against the Kings. They picked up back-to-back overtime victories on the road in San Jose and St. Louis. However, they fell to the LA Kings 3-2. The early 3-0 lead from the Kings in the 1st period proved to be insurmountable.
New York has been playing the better hockey as of late, but the Flames can look back at the previous meeting and believe they are still the superior team.
