by Bradley Gibbs in AFCON Picks
Kicking off Tuesday's African Cup of Nations action we have a game between Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea, which will take place at Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca. Having performed well at this tournament in recent years, reaching the final in 2023, before reaching the semi finals in both 2017 and 2019, the Burkina Faso boys will be looking to impress. Now coached by Brama Traoré, the Stallions have plenty of quality, while they know how to get results, so don't be surprised to see them thrive in Morocco.
A little less likely to impress are the men from Equatorial Guinea, who did reach the semi finals back in 2015, but that was on home soil. Since then, the team nicknamed National Thunder has failed to get close to being crowned as the best in the continent, going out in the last eight in 2021, before exiting at the last-16 stage in late 2023. Will they do better this time around? Recent form does not suggest so.

Burkina Faso - Equatorial Guinea: Form Analysis
It's very hard to criticize the recent efforts of the Burkina Faso boys, let's be honest. We're talking about a team that enters the African Cup of Nations having won with regularity in recent times, winning each of their last four. Brama Traoré's men certainly know how to get the job done. When last in action, they trounced Benin by three goals to nil, which followed a 3-2 success against Niger. They've also scored three or more goals in each of their last three, losing just one of their previous seven. Unbeaten in six, five of which they've won, the Stallions should be feeling very confident in Casablanca.

Let's be honest, the National Thunder probably won't be feeling as confident at Stade Mohamed V, where they'll be hoping to bounce back from what was a disappointing defeat against Madagascar last time out. On that occasion, they failed to score, which is now something that they've done in three of their last five games.

Burkina Faso & Equatorial Guinea Squad Analysis
Brama Traoré will be free to pick his best XI on Tuesday, with no current injuries to contend with. This means that the likes of Bertrand Traore and Dango Outtara, both of whom are currently playing regular football in the English Premier League, will feature from the outset. Ligue 1 defender Arsene Kouassi, who plays for Lorient, is also expected to start, while the star of the show at the back will be Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba.
the star of the show at the back will be Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba.
Unfortunately, the Equatorial Guinea starting XI is not likely to feature many big-name players. Head coach Juan Michá doesn't really have any top-level players to call upon, with Torino's Saul Coco standing out as the pick of the bunch. The defender currently operates in Serie A and is one of only two players playing in the so called big five European leagues. The other is Jose Nabil, who is currently under contract at French Ligue 1 side Nantes, though he is yet to feature for the first XI.

Our Burkina Faso vs Equatorial Guinea Prediction
It's not that this Equatorial Guinea team is the type to get steam rollered on a regular basis, but we are talking about a side that lacks final-third quality, which is going to be a problem against a high-scoring Burkina Faso outfit. Let's face it, the Stallions have some very capable offensive players, and they're in the habit of both creating chances and scoring goals.
For my money, the difference in offensive quality between these two teams is greater than the early odds suggest. Therefore, the Burkina Faso victory should be priced a little shorter. In other words, betting on the Stallions to win at odds of -115 offers some value for money.
