The Atlantic Division-leading Tampa Bay Lightning face a tricky matchup on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres at the Benchmark International Arena.
The Lightning are used to dominating against the Sabres, but they have become a much stronger team in 2025-26. Since Dec. 9, Buffalo has gone 22-5-2, climbing from the bottom of the Eastern Conference into playoff contention. They have earned 46 points over that span, tied with Tampa Bay for the most in the league.
After losing three of their last four games before the Olympic break, including 4-3 in overtime in Tampa to the Lightning, the Sabres returned to winning ways on Wednesday night. Newly crowned Olympic champion Tage Thompson made the difference in a tightly contested affair, finishing a 2-1 victory with a goal and an assist.
Tampa Bay returned from the break with a back-to-back set earlier this week. Jon Cooper’s side beat Toronto 4-2 but lost 5-4 to Carolina, which shares the Eastern Conference lead with the Bolts. With Nikita Kucherov in extraordinary form, the Lightning haven’t dropped back-to-back games for two months.
Kucherov holds the NHL’s longest active point streak with 12 games. In 2026, he has produced 12 goals and 32 assists in 18 appearances. On Saturday night, Kucherov will attempt to match the longest scoring streak of his career.

Our Tampa Bay Lightning vs Buffalo Sabres Prediction
Tampa Bay can make scoring very difficult, with Vasilevskiy possibly playing the best hockey of his career. However, the Sabres are full of exciting attacking talent and only recently got three pucks past Vasilevskiy, when they lost to the Lightning 4-3 in overtime on Feb. 3.
Lindy Ruff’s team holds the ninth-best scoring record in the league, averaging 3.34 goals per game. In 2026, Buffalo has settled for fewer than three goals only five times in 19 games.
Our prediction for Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Buffalo Sabres: Sabres over 2.5 goals.
