The Detroit Red Wings (37-31-8 SU, 43-33 ATS) host the Buffalo Sabres (37-35-5 SU, 44-33 ATS) in a game that’s become a desperate situation for both teams. The Wings’ recent skid of six losses in seven games has loosened their grip on the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They now find themselves staring up at the Pittsburgh Penguins, albeit with one game in hand for the eighth position.
There have been questions about whether Detroit is hitting the wall or simply hit a road swing at the worst time. The Wings have been much better at Little Caesars Arena this season, taking points from 68% of their home games this season. But they also had Alex Lyon lose 10 straight games, and three of those were in Detroit. None were particularly close, either; all three of Lyon’s home losses came by multiple goals.

For Buffalo, there’s a question of motivation, although you’d never know it by how well the Sabres have played in their two games in April. Buffalo faced a pair of playoff hopefuls in Washington and Philadelphia in its past two games and iced both of them for comfortable victories. The Sabres have held their opponent to two goals or less in four of their past six games, and they’ve won all four of them.
The Red Wings’ recent skid seems to have more to do with themselves rather than being a bout of bad luck or scheduling. Detroit has not looked confident on defense, in part because the wins hadn’t been coming. The Wings gave up 38 shots last time out against the Rangers, and Buffalo could further expose Detroit’s defensive issues and confidence. Our prediction for Buffalo vs. Detroit is Sabres to win.
